Contra Dance in Miami

In 2019, we dance every second Sunday at the Coral Gables Congregational Church (check out the link above). Contra dance is an American folk dance that originated in New England and is now found around the world. On these pages you’ll find a brief explanation of the dance and some of it’s history and a page dedicated to each of the Miami area dances. All of our dances are open to everyone, no partner is ever needed - folks come singly, as couples and in family groups. There is always brief (but sufficient) instruction about the dance usually in the half-hour before the dance begins. There are beginners, intermediate and advanced dancers at every dance and folks aren’t concerned with how accomplished any dancer is, we dance just for the fun of it.

Cornbread Dance Band

Caller Anita Mason and the Cornbread Dance band have been performing American Folk Dances, called Contra, for the past decade throughout South Florida. They are one of several bands that play at the Coconut Grove Dance.
